Applitools alternatives

Applitools Starter is $667/month billed annually. Here are the alternatives at every price point, what you give up on Visual AI and cross-browser rendering, and how to read the checkpoint maths.

VisualMax EngineeringProduct team

Applitools is the enterprise incumbent and its Visual AI is a genuine technical advantage rather than marketing — perceptual comparison really does suppress the antialiasing noise that makes naive pixel diffing unusable. Teams look elsewhere almost entirely because of price, and occasionally because of the checkpoint model.

Best for: Teams whose Applitools bill outgrew the value they get from Visual AI.

Free 5,000 screenshots/mo · Pro $100/mo for 35,000, then $0.004 each

The obvious destination if cost drove the search. The honest trade is noise: you will spend time on determinism that Applitools' comparison was absorbing for you. Budget a week of threshold tuning and read how to fix flaky visual tests before you start.

Strengths
  • Roughly a sixth of Applitools Starter's monthly cost
  • Published pricing with no annual commitment
  • Full review and approval workflow
  • Open-source core, so self-hosting stays available
Trade-offs
  • Pixel comparison with tolerances rather than perceptual AI — expect to tune thresholds
  • No equivalent of Ultrafast Grid; cross-browser means running your own matrix
  • Smaller support organisation and integration surface

Free plan 2,000 screenshots · paid pricing not published

The closest competitor on capability, and the one worth benchmarking directly against Applitools on your own noisy pages. Run both free tiers against the same set of flaky routes before deciding — vendor false-positive percentages are not comparable across methodologies.

Strengths
  • Visual AI engine plus Smart RCA, aimed at the same noise problem Applitools solves
  • Comparable SDK breadth: Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Puppeteer, Jest, Appium, XCUITest, Espresso
  • Native mobile visual testing, which Applitools competes on less directly
  • Figma-to-page comparison
Trade-offs
  • Paid pricing is unpublished, so the cost comparison requires a sales conversation
  • AI effectiveness claims are vendor-reported and not independently verified
  • LambdaTest rebranded to TestMu AI in January 2026, so documentation spans both names

Free 5,000 billed snapshots · Starter $179/mo · Pro $399/mo

Substantially cheaper, and a good fit only if your visual surface can be expressed as stories. If Applitools was capturing real application routes, this is a change of testing strategy rather than a vendor swap.

Strengths
  • Published pricing at every tier, well below Applitools Starter
  • TurboSnap multiplies the effective allowance roughly fivefold
  • Cross-browser from the $179 tier without per-browser checkpoint multiplication
  • Best review and design-collaboration UI in the category
Trade-offs
  • Requires Storybook — a real migration if your Applitools SDK calls are page-level
  • Story coverage is not page coverage
  • No perceptual AI comparison

The largest cost saving and the largest capability loss. Viable for a disciplined team with a stable surface; painful if your pages are data-heavy or your reviewers are not engineers. Setup guide.

Strengths
  • No licence cost at any volume
  • Genuine Chromium, Firefox and WebKit engines
  • toHaveScreenshot() retries until the image is stable, removing timing flake
  • No data leaves your CI
Trade-offs
  • No perceptual comparison — pixelmatch with thresholds, which is materially noisier
  • No hosted review UI at all
  • Platform-specific baselines and repository bloat
  • You absorb all the determinism work Applitools was handling

This is our product. The relevant contrast with Applitools is where the intelligence is spent: they filter noise after capture, we try to avoid generating it by waiting for the page to be genuinely ready. Both approaches are legitimate; ours also removes the per-state authoring that drives checkpoint consumption.

Strengths
  • No SDK, so there is nothing to remove from an existing suite
  • Routes discovered automatically rather than budgeted as checkpoints per state you wrote
  • Readiness handled before capture, so less noise reaches comparison in the first place
  • Change targeting recaptures only affected routes, which is what actually controls volume
Trade-offs
  • No equivalent of Ultrafast Grid for very large browser matrices
  • Newer, with a smaller integration surface than Applitools
  • Hosted only

What you actually give up

Two Applitools capabilities have no real equivalent at the lower price points, and it is worth being clear about them:

  1. Perceptual comparison. Pixel diffing with a tolerance is a blunter instrument. On a font-heavy or animation-heavy interface you will see more false positives, and the fix is determinism work rather than a setting.
  2. Ultrafast Grid. Rendering one capture across many browsers without running that matrix yourself is genuinely differentiated. Alternatives mean either running the matrix in your own CI or narrowing it — see cross browser visual testing tools.

If either of those is load-bearing for you, the cheaper options will cost you time instead of money. If neither is — and for many teams with a Chromium-majority audience and a stable design system, neither is — the savings are real.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Applitools?

Argos at $100/month is the strongest value alternative if cost drove the search, though you trade perceptual comparison for pixel diffing with tolerances. SmartUI is the closest on capability since it also offers AI-based comparison, and Chromatic is cheaper still if your coverage can live in Storybook.

How much does Applitools cost?

The Starter plan is $667 per month billed annually, including 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints with unlimited users. Professional and Enterprise tiers are custom-priced, starting from 150 and 350 active pages respectively.

Is there a free alternative to Applitools?

Playwright's built-in visual assertions are free and unlimited, though they use pixel comparison with thresholds rather than perceptual AI, and provide no hosted review workflow. Argos, Chromatic, Percy and SmartUI all offer free tiers between 2,000 and 5,000 screenshots per month.
